Belanda Hitam Heritage & Portrait
The Voyage of the 3,000
Elmina (Ghana) → Purworejo (Java) → Vianen (NL)

A shared history forged between 1831 and 1872 that created a vibrant Afro-Indo heritage of pride, discipline, and community.

CULTURAL HERITAGE SPOTLIGHT

Belanda Hitam: The African-Indo Legacy

From Elmina to Purworejo to the Netherlands

Between 1831 and 1872, Ghanaian soldiers enlisted in the KNIL, journeyed across the Indian Ocean to Java, married Indonesian women, and established a vibrant Afro-Indo heritage in Purworejo. Following the revolution, they repatriated to the Netherlands, settling in Vianen and beyond. We honor our Afro-Indo brothers and sisters—where Ashanti Adinkra motifs meet Javanese Batik.

Sankofa • Adinkra

The Ghanaian wisdom to remember and retrieve our roots, guiding the typography and visual identity of our streetwear drops.

Parang • Javanese Batik

The symbol of relentless waves and enduring resilience, honoring families who crossed oceans and rebuilt their homes with dignity.
